Clashes ensued when MIM members protested against the renovation of a temple near Charminar late at night.

The old city, already under prohibitory orders following group clashes, suffered another jolt last night when a temple, located close to Charminar was taken up for renovation.

The tenuous situation was threatened to break after the Charminar MLA Ahmed Pasha Quadri and some others of the MIM gathered near Charminar where the temple committee had taken up some renovation works at late night.

Meanwhile, the BJP leader and former MLA Baddam Balreddy and the Bajrang Dal activists too arrived at the scene. There were some followers of the Viswa Hindu Parishad also. They staged a dharna before the Charminar demanding the renovation work be allowed to continue.

Police reinforcement reached and they resorted to lathi-charge to disperse those sitting on dharna. Some activists were taken into custody. But the dharna continued, nevertheless. Situation was tense in the morning when a whiff of rumour spread that communal trouble had erupted at Charminar. Many areas such as Lal Darwaza, Uppuguda, Chatrinaka, Shahali Banda, Sultanshahi witnessed an upsurge of excitement and many began to travel to Charminar

Meanwhile, the additional commissioner Amit Garg and DCP South Zone Akun Sbaharwal visited the spot and stopped the work. Police said they were examining the photographs of the original structure of the temple and allow renovation later. At the moment it is status quo, he said.
