S Arun can’t stop twittering. A flower vendor, Arun was married to Shobha in the mass marriage of the downtrodden arranged by the Yousufain Trust yesterday.

“I never thought I would be able to shake hands with so many VIPs,” exulted Arun who, looking at his bride Shobha, said, “so many big people at my wedding! I could not believe it. I am thankful to the Yousufain Trust.” Sobha seemed to agree too. Though coy, she nodded in agreement.

The mass marriage function of 15 couples, both Hindus and Muslims, was held with much fanfare and attendance on the premises of Durgah Yousufain. Thousands participated and enjoyed the feast afterward. Seven Hindu couples and eight Muslim couples were joined in matrimony with each community holding weddings according to their customs on the same stage. Poorest of the poor were selected.

Talking to Postnoon, the mother of one of the brides said with a tinge of gratitude, “I am very thankful to the Trust. I would not have been able to conduct the marriage on my own.”The function was graced by the chairman of Waqf board, Khusroo Pasha Biyabani, commissioner of police Anurag Sharma, and president of the trust Sajjada Nasheen.
