One-day getaways
With Dussehra holiday around the corner, there couldn’t be a more perfect time to take a break from the maddening crowd. We bring you a list of blissful holiday destinations that are just a drive away.
Anandagiri hills
It takes about three hours to cover the 90 km drive from Hyderabad to reach the ‘Ooty of Andhra Pradesh’— Ananthagiri Hills. Ananthagiri is a good trekking destination, especially for first-time trekkers. The Ananthapadmanabha Swamy Temple — which was built by the Nizam Nawabs 400 years ago — is one of the prime attractions on the Ananthagiri Hills. The ideal thing to do is visit this temple first and then proceed to trekking. A good way to wrap up the trip is by visiting the picturesque Nagasamudram Lake.
Srisailam
If you are a spiritual person then don’t think twice before heading to Srisailam where you can spend the day leisurely visiting the temple and then exploring the surroundings. Situated in Nallamala Hills of Kurnool district, Srisailam is about 212 km south of Hyderabad. While you are there, you can also visit Akka Mahadevi caves, Srisailam dam, Srisailam Sanctuary and Mallela Theertham.
Manjeera Dam & Singoor Dam
The Manjeera Dam is 50kms away from Hyderabad and boasts of a dam as well as a bird sanctuary, in addition to crocodiles and marsh muggers. If the weather is conducive, it’s a beautiful place to enjoy the beauty of nature. Singoor Dam is about 70km from the city. It is a tiring ride but worth the trouble. In fact, if you start early on you can touch both these dams before the day ends.
Bhuvanagiri fort
If you’re willing to use the Dussehra holiday to your advantage and get away from the traffic in the city, a visit to the Bhuvanagiri Fort might be the ideal way. Located 48kms from Hyderabad, the fort in Bhongir or Bhuvanagiri was built on an isolated monolithic rock by western Chalukya ruler Tribhuvanamalla Vikramaditya VI and was thus named after him as Tribhuvanagiri. A moat that encircles the fort, a vast underground chamber, trap doors, an armoury, stables, ponds, wells etc., make for a fascinating viewing.
Nagarjuna sagar
Nagarjuna Sagar, located at a distance of 150 km from Hyderabad, is one of the most prominent Buddhist centers. Known in ancient days as Vijayapuri, Nagarjunasagar takes its present name from Nagarjuna, one of the most revered Buddhist monks. Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is the world’s largest masonry dam at the time of its construction, which is built across Krishna River at Nagarjuna Sagar in Guntur district and Nalgonda district.
