Bid to smuggle gold in pilgrim’s bag

| October 23, 2012

A Haj committee functionary is suspected to have used a pilgrim’s bag to smuggle gold but the alert airline security detected it before the passenger boarded the plane to Saudi Arabia on Saturday.

The issue, which created a flutter among the security staff and the Haj committee, led to chaos in the Haj House. Checking resulted in the discovery of gold and diamonds wrapped in plastic sachets. The estimated worth is around Rs.5 lakh, officials said.

This incident occurred where some 300 Hajjis boarded the plane. Questioning revealed that the passenger was being used by a suspected Haj

committee member, though exact details could not be ferreted out as yet. Postnoon’s repeated efforts to contact Haj committee chairman Syed Khaleeluddin Ahmed proved futile.
