‘Reality shows no longer nurture talent’

Lucknow: Veteran music composer Anandji, of the Kalyanji-Anandji duo, who have discovered many new talents through music shows like “Antakshari” and “Saregama”, feels that the aim of such shows has shifted away from nurturing young singers.

“Pure singing and talent was pushed to the sidelines once TRPs became a big issue also the guiding line,” Anandji, here to receive the second Naushad Samman Award for his contribution to Hindi cinema, said.

The music director, who alongwith his brother, is remembered for the hit numbers in “Tridev”, “Zanjeer”, “Don”, “Saraswatichandra” and “Qurbani” said, “Gradually the makers of talent hunt programmes have deviated from the main task of looking for fresh talent and shifted towards the presentation of the contestants, their clothes and other appendages.”

The music composer, who has to his credit a number of accolades like the National award, Filmfare and Cine music directors award, also does not propagate the pattern of judging the talent on the basis of rendition of oft repeated “filmy songs”.

“The frequently heard songs can be practiced and learnt… it does not actually showcase the real calibre of the contestant,” he said.

‘The unnecessary interference of advanced technology also spoil the purity of songs and undermines its originality,” he said.

Anandji – who has worked for the leading film directors of his time like Prakash Mehra, Manoj Kumar, Feroz Khan, Manmohan Desai, Sultan Ahmed, Rajiv Rai, Gulshan Rai and Subhash Ghai – said that through advance technology things can be presented differently.
