A ‘B’ under the bonnet

Mercedes is all set to launch its B-Class, a sports tourer that aims to be many cars in one classy package. The company has plans to launch a petrol version in October and wants to bring out a diesel version at a later date. Mercedes feels this could be a sure shot winner.

Are you planning to buy a car that is compact to drive on city roads and at the same time capable of taking you for a smooth drive on a weekend holiday? Mercedes Benz has launched the B-class Sports Tourer to target customers, who are looking to have best of both segments in one single car.

“Mercedes Benz B-Class Sports Tourer is a kind of crossover in the segment which is neither a sedan nor an SUV. The car can be used on an everyday basis in the city without compromising on the beautiful off-road countryside drives. The car is designed for the cities where there is heavy traffic and parking problems. It is fully loaded with a panoramic sunroof and beautiful dashboard. It is a compact car, but if one looks at the interiors, it has more space compared to most of our cars,” said Yashwant Jhabakh, chairman, Mahavir Motors.

Talking about the target customers, Yashwant said, “The prospective customers are the young crowd (25–40 years) who may not own a second or third car due to parking space or other constraints. For instance, a husband and wife may have their own cars for everyday use in a nuclear family. This car can be used for long drives without the need to buy a third car,”

The company has plans to launch a petrol version in October and wants to bring out a diesel version at a later date. “The official price is not out yet but can be priced around `25 lakh (ex-showroom). As the car is the first-of-its-kind in the market, there is no direct competition. The car is aimed at creating its own niche market,” he said.

Talking about fierce competition with Audi and BMW in the range, he said, “The market has evolved over time. We are happy that the presence of these brands is giving customers more choice. He can choose the car that best suits him and his needs, across brands,”

On the city premium car market, he said, “The Hyderabad customer is knowledgeable and has been to many countries and knows what he is buying. The city has a sizable segment of customers who can afford a Mercedes. The city has emerged as one of the major markets for all premium brands.”

Mercedes has continued to be innovative by investing heavily in R&D. The company always aims to be one step ahead of what the customer will want. The A-class that is to be launched will be far ahead of any other car in that segment, in terms of technology and safety.”

As far as the customer is concerned, there is always a sense of pride in owning a Mercedes,” he added.
