Reporter’s Diary: A somnolent mayoralty

Any institution decays with the passage of time. The mayoral office is no exception. The mayor is supposed to be the first citizen of the City and a citizens’ man. He is the patriarch, or in the case of women mayors, the matriarch of the City. But how many remember this?

It was indeed sad that when natives from the North-East, who help run the City’s economy, were being troubled by hoodlums and anti-social elements, the mayor and deputy mayor were unaware. Thousands were running away leaving their belongings because some thugs (alleged to be under the patronage of a political party) served them an ultimatum to leave the City by August 20 or face guillotine.

When our reporters tried to get through to the mayor or deputy mayor they were always told that they were either away or in a meeting. After 12 hours, we got through to deputy mayor who said he too ‘heard something like that’ but has no information. But when the GHMC pockets their professional tax, don’t they have a modicum of responsibility to the tax payers? Or a mayor will listen only to the vote bank? Irrespective of the party loyalty or caste or creed. He should be the first to know whatever happens to his City. Pity some do not understand this. Mayorality belongs to the whole City.
