Shockingly, the Foreign Regional Registration officials were unaware about the Burmese immigrants, till Postnoon broke the news on July 30.
Here is the bomb. If the City police, the district administration, and political leaders have little idea of several hundred fleeing Burmese (Myanmar) camping in the City for months, the Foreigners Regional Registration office (FRRO) has absolutely no clue!
The State’s special branch which haunts political opponents with minute information of their activities too has not come across with such a vast flow in to the City.
“Are they here as the media report?” was the query FERRO officials asked Postnoon. “We are all shocked to read the news about the Burmese camping in the City. When we enquired about them and found out efforts are being made to give them refugee status,” said Jeetendra Kumar, a FRRO official in Hyderabad office. He said they could be dealt with under Sec 14 of Indian Foreigners Act and could either could be arrested or deported.
It was Postnoon (on July 30) that first broke the news about the Burmese immigrants camping in Balapur under the charity of a businessman and a local political party. Over 300 people are in two camps while there is no definite idea of how many more are spread across the City. A day after the publication the South Zone police went and spoke to them, but it is not clear if the police officers have taken an inventory of the people.
