Users can turn the TV on or off, activate selected apps or search for and select content in the web browser — all without touching the remote.

What would it feel like to browse internet, watch videos and family photos or to play an Angry Bird game on your TV? Couch potatoes can now turn out active by using these Smart TVs for simple computing. The screen size can range for these TVs anywhere from 22 to 75 inches. These TVs are also driving app revolution on television sets.

Samsung, with 1,500 apps, is eying 60 per cent market share. The company has introduced new voice control, motion control, and face recognition commands to enhance user experience. Users can turn the TV on or off, activate selected apps or search for and select content in the web browser — all without touching the remote. The Samsung 2012 Smart television series feature a built-in camera that recognises movement in the foreground, as well as microphones that recognise voice.

Google TV which was launched in 2010 in US was not instant hit but has evolved over time with much simpler remote enabling better interactivity. The brand had tie up with LG to bring a new range of Smart TVs and with Sony to manufacture boxes which turn out any normal TV in to a smart TV. However, Google has announced launch date in India.

The sales of the smart TVs taking a reasonable share in the overall high-end TV sales. “Almost 50 per cent of the total TVs sold are smart TVs. The growth in internet speeds also pushed the sales and need of smart TVs,” said a major single brand retailer in Ameerpet.

On the developer’s front, Smart TV is opening another avenue to design apps. “There will not be much scope for professional applications. However, apps like breaking news, offers in the locality, reminders about paying the electricity bill and games will have more takers,” said Vishwanath Alluri, chairman, IMImobile.
