My name is Jasmine and I am 15 years old. I started running when I was 12 years old. I knew then that there was no need for me run or prove myself in anyway but after my first run — a 5km road run — I always wanted to keep getting better at it.

Running is not easy; you need constant encouragement and motivation. Till date I have ran many 5 and 10 km road runs.

I believe running is a cure to anything, from depression to unhealthy lifestyles; running fixes you up to become better, healthier and happier people. I was never an athlete and I was pretty average in sports.

Running also really shapes up your personality. I never knew who I was. My friends never understood why I ran “soooo much” as they would put it. They thought it was absurd that I ran knowing I won’t win anything. They didn’t know I was winning so much just by crossing that finish line. Back then I didn’t know how or what to say to them in my defence, but now I do. Here’s a short poem that I wrote:

Running – strength with each step

A pounding heartbeat, a heavy breath

Two fisted hands near me and a rush in my head with every step.

At 15, I know nothing in life is clearer, simpler than running

You practice, you prepare, you improve and enhance

It is as simple as it gets; It’s almost like life in itself.

You should know how not to give up

You should know how not to stop

Working and gasping and pushing and moving constantly till that work, gasp, push and move Exhausts you so much that it actually feels good.

Run! Not because it will bring you medals

Run because it will keep you going

Run because it will be a constant reminder of the strength you carry

Run because you know your body wants to

Run because it doesn’t need reason

Run simply because you can.

“Yes! I can” is the spirit a runner stands by

No matter what be the circumstances

the beauty is;

You know you are a runner and so you will get by.
