A stranger in the shadows
Jeffery Deaver’s The Kiss of Death XO is a fast-paced thriller about a country singer and her obsessive stalker.
Kayleigh Tower is all set to perform in her hometown Fresno till a series of mysterious deaths and attacks on people that are close to Kayleigh take place. The sudden appearance of a notorious stalker in the midst of these incidents raises many questions.Could they be related? Is the stalker being made the victim or is Kayleigh’s life in danger? Grief, thrill, shocking incidents and realisation about relationships is what The Kiss of Death XO is all about.
“As bad as things get, you’ve got to know that I’m always with you, your shadow…” go the lines of Kayleigh Tower’s popular single. For Kayleigh this was the story of her life but for an “admirer” her songs meant much more— they had a secret message that were meant just for him. Edwin Sharp at the outset appears to be one of those millions of fans that write in to their favourite celebrity. But soon people around Kayleigh realise that his appreciation was turning into an eerie obsession.
Kathyrn Dance, an agent with the California Bureau of Investigation, mother, music lover and Kayleigh Tower’s friend slowly finds herself interested in this case. Apart from Dance there are a number of other characters which add to the narrative with their blunt, mysterious and too good to be true characterisations that get you thinking about their involvement in the case.
The book gets its title from the popular sign-off XO that Kayleigh uses while signing her fan mails.
Jeffery Deaver’s narrative is crisp and intriguing- the perfect elements of a thriller. As the tale unfolds the narrative does get slightly complex but surprisingly still manages to grab your attention. A major drawback of the novel would be the climax, although interesting it does seem to be never-ending at one point.
The book is definitely worth a read and if you have the time the music of the novel is available on the website www.jefferydeaverxomusic.com , reading the book to the background music of In your shadows is quite a treat.
