In a tragic-comic scene, the crestfallen Congress is trying to resurrect the charisma of Indira Gandhi to exorcise the ghost of YSR in welfare schemes.
Exhausted of all tricks and not sure of the vote-catching value of the present Congress leaders, the ruling party has fallen back on the good old Indira.
cm’S PEt PROJECT
Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who recently launched his pet project — Indiramma Baata in East Godavari district has launched an innovative advertisement to publicise his mass-contact programme. The advertisement prominently displays a picture of the charismatic leader Indira Gandhi addressing public gatherings and interacting with various groups during her hey days.
The advertisement is being aggressively aired by all news television channels since the last few days. The ad depicts all the welfare programmes launched during the YSR regime between 2004 and 2009.
But the entire ad campaign is seen as an attempt of the ruling Congress to scrap the name of former CM YS Rajasekhara Reddy from its welfare programmes. The State government strongly feels that a majority in AP still considers these programmes to be YSR’s brainchild.
While Congress leaders welcome the initiative, the opposition YSRC says its prediction that YSR’s name would be scrapped from the welfare programmes associated with him is now coming true. APCC general secretary Abid Rasool Khan said that it is the need of the hour for the party to take quick steps in order to keep its declining image intact. He sees the latest move in the same direction and adds that the party had sustained huge electoral losses because many of the welfare schemes in the State are still considered as YSR schemes.
“It’s a great move by our CM. Indira Gandhi was a crowd puller. The promotional campaign will definitely have an impact on the weaker sections. It will also help the party create an image among the people of the State that all these welfare programmes were the brainchild of the party,” he said. Minister for medical education Kondru Murali Mohan echoed the sentiment.
“If we look at the by-elections, it becomes clear that people still believe that YSR introduced these programmes. With this in their mind, they voted for YSRC. The ad will definitely help,” he said. It’s a conspiracy YSRC leader Gattu Ramachandra Rao, said that their prediction that the ruling Congress is hatching a conspiracy to remove the name of YSR became a reality with the telecast of the ad on various TV channels. He further added that the portrayal of Indira Gandhi is also an indication that it did not have any leader like YSR to lead the party.
