Move over reality shows, Bollywood is now eyeing television shows to promote their movies
Imagine what it will be like when Bollywood stars like Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Vidya Balan pop onto your small screen and share screen space with your favourite television characters, advising them and interacting with them. These are the new tactics that filmmakers are coming up with to promote their movies.
After making their presence felt in reality shows, Bollywood actors are eyeing serials to get their movies noticed. At times they appear as actors who come in for a cameo shaking a leg with the lead actors of the serial and at other times they are appear as characters they play in the movies.
“This is a very good marketing strategy that can do wonders for the film. One needs to pay a lot for the advertisements on the small screen to promote movies. This is an easy way out for the filmmakers as this arrangement is beneficial for both the movie and the serial. Television serials have a wider reach and if a star as the character appears in the serial it will help in the grabbing more eyeballs. The television show will not have much to gain from this arrangement as the audience gets hooked onto the serial because of the characters,” Adman Prahlad Kakkar says.
It may seem like a win-win situation but there are times when changes have to be incorporated in a hurry to include the actors’ cameos in the television show. This can work against the serial as the audience will see through this marketing technique if not done carefully.
“Most of the times, these changes including the actors are incorporated at the last moment which can downgrade the product. On the other hand, television is a fantastic medium which reaches its audience everyday, so if an opportunity comes up I will surely include my actors’ cameos in the movie provided the script is tweaked effectively,” Abhinay Deo, director of Delhi Belly, says.Television shows are known to borrow heavily from Bollywood with these programmes showing clips and movie songs whenever there is a special occasion like an anniversary or a birthday in the serials. Bollywood actors appearing on the shows give these serials necessary glitter that serials vie for.
“Bollywood actors are any day more popular than television ones. Even though, television has changed a lot with many young actors joining the field, it still lacks the allure of the big screen. Thus serial makers jump at the idea of roping in Bollywood actors to small screen,” Kaushik Mishra from Zee TV says. This approach is seen as more innovative and effective as opposed to the guest appearances stars made on reality shows.
“The audience has grown tired of actors appearing on reality shows and giving scripted performances and fake smiles. Moreover, actors appear on reality shows as judges or guests every other day and so this trend is no longer interesting,” a viewer Niharika S says.
This trend can lose its charm if more Bollywood movies follow suit. But as of now, this move has a novelty factor associated with it.
