This particle could be the Higgs boson

| July 4, 2012

Geneva: CERN scientists have confirmed that they have found a particle which is consistent with the Standard Model Higgs boson model and they are 99.999999666% sure that it is the real deal.

According to scientists there is one in 9 trillion chances of this particle not being the ‘god particle’. Despite this, the scientists are labelling the results as “preliminary”. They are planning to conduct more detailed tests before confirming if the particle is indeed the Standard Model Higgs. The Higgs mechanism explains how particles come to acquire mass, and the Higgs boson’s discovery would confirm that the mechanism is at work.

The data which led to the discovery is based on the work conducted by CERN over a period of two years.
