In an incredulous incident, a hardcore criminal escaped from a police van while four armed escorts watched the scene unfold as mute spectators

Venkateshwar Rao alias Jackie Chan, an under-trial prisoner at Cherlapally jail to whose (dis)credit hundreds of cases have been registered in various parts of the State, escaped from a police van last night. This happened despite a four-member armed police team escorting him!

The filmy style escape took place at the Cherlapally railway station gate, Kushaiguda inspector, Srikanth Goud said.

The police version goes like this. Jackie, 30, was produced in the Nirmal Court during the day and the van was returning to the jail when it negotiated a speed breaker at the Cherlapally railway station that resulted in the vehicle slowing down. Taking advantage of this and the cover of darkness, the prison jumped out in a jiffy and bolted before the police personnel could react.

The police could not explain if the prisoner was handcuffed. Also they are unable to say why Jackie, known for hundreds of crimes, was allowed to sit near the door. So what action did the armed escorts take? “Inquiry, as usual, is in progress,” is the response.

Jackie is a notorious criminal, police admit. He is involved in robbery, murder, extortion and molestation. He was convicted several times and had been imprisoned many times in different jails in the State. There are a few police stations that he is not familiar with, remarked Cherlapally superintendent KL Srinivas Rao.

Jackie belongs to Prakasam district and police say his whole family is in the “crime” business. While he was making his ‘career’ in crime, Venkateshwara is said to have practiced martial arts and adored Jackie Chan for his prowess in Kung Fu. Thus he called himself Jackie Chan.
