Create your own style

Yesterday the fashion feature celebrated Hollywood’s leading ladies who made their mark being the original crusaders when it came to style. Their fashion choices may not have been what everyone agreed to be trending at the moment, but they owned their style because it was a direct osmosis of who they were. Their appearances will be remembered because it reflected their taste and personality however it was — simple, glamorous, or eccentric. Today, the article is about the Indian women who wear what they know looks good on them. Some on the list, you might argue have made some bad judgments when it came to fashion. True, but those were instances when they were dressed as something that was far from their true personality. Which just proves why they should not dress up considering what looks great on the pages of a glossy magazine. Their style very much reflects their career, their craft, their personal life and mood. Take a cue from these women and dress according to your style.

Sona Mohapatra
Sona Mohapatra is a young singer who broke the existing norms of Indian female vocalists who are recognised for singing playback in Bollywood films alone. She is a statuesque beauty who has an electric stage presence which is evident in her live performances. She has spoken to the media how she likes to be the face of her music when people hear her. Which shows that Sona understands that a thing like music has to be personal and be communicated from the actual source for it to connect better with her audience. It is true for her personal style options. One can see she wears what she desires and which reflect her inner self while performing. Sona’s style is bold and she likes to go for avant garde designers like Kallol Datta and Eina Ahluwalia. Millions recently saw her live performances via the television show Satyamev Jayate.

Lakshmi Menon
When did Lakshmi Menon start her modelling career is not known to many. But when she made it big is known by many, as it was on a much larger scale, bigger than any model in the past. Menon’s dusky skin and dark hair were unique to the global fashion world and she was accepted, as she was. Menon, like other models did not turn to films, Bollywood or television once she achieved fame. She wears simple clothes with dishevelled hair reflecting a very personal style when not working. She seems very comfortable in her skin and her style choices clearly reflect that outlook. She carries the cool laid back style of Goa with her wherever she travels with her fashion and style choices.

Vidya Balan
Vidya Balan is one of the leading actors of our generation. She has perfected delivering varied roles on screen. She seldom repeats her characters in films and her character’s style is also unique to each film. It is good to know the actor sports her own style off screen sometimes. In fact, whenever she has dressed as her character in real life, it has been a major disappointment. Her attempt at trying college fashion for the promotion of Kismat Konnection, or the frilly outfits she wore for The Dirty Picture are a case in example. The fact is that in real life you are representing yourself even while promoting the about to be released film. Her appearance in a Sabyasachi sari, who is her close friend, always hits the right note no matter how many times she chooses to wear him. His sensibility and drapes suits Vidya’s body and style and that is when her true style is reflected.

Anoushka Shankar
Sitar player Anoushka Shankar is an unconventional beauty in the true sense. Maestro Pandit Ravi Shakar’s daughter, singer Norah Jones’ step sister, Anoushka holds her own in talent and individual presence. Her music has fetched her a Grammy Award and that did not make her want to be like other celebrities and turn mainstream. Her style is very unique and she makes a conscious decision to wear Indian wear with a personalised tweak or two. She looks elegant in a dress or an Indian suit. She chooses to wear Indian designers on many occasions and promotes them on an international platform by doing so.
