A slum-free City in five years time

The GHMC has prepared an abstract plan of a slum free city proposal within a span of five years with an estimated cost of `12,054 crores and with 23,34,985 proposals.

Currently there are 1,476 slums out of which 1,179 are notified and 297 non notified slums in the GHMC limits. “There are 985 slums in the core area of MCH covering around 66 per cent of the population and 491 slums in peripheral area covering 34 per cent of the population,” said MT Krishna Babu, commissioner, GHMC.

In the GHMC limits, the slum population is 17,36,152 covering 80.45 square kilometres. “It has been observed that 12 per cent of the GHMC area is occupied with the slums and 26 per cent of the population lives in these slums,” he added. The GHMC is planning to relocate 16 slums which are in hazardous locations, in order to protect lakes from further encroachments.
