Who doesn’t love to buy a saree, especially if you get to take your pick right at your doorstep? Everyone. Cashing in on this was P Bhawani, a con artist, who was recently arrested by the Jubilee Hills police. According to the police, Bhawani would visit homes under the pretext of selling sarees and then get away with a loot of gold and other jewellery, some of which was recovered from her possession.

According to investigating officer K Nageshwar Rao, the 48-year-old accused is a widow and is a resident of Jawahar Nagar basti of Jubilee Hills. Bhawani used to work as a maid, but after her husband’s death was in a severe financial crunch. That is when she decided to earn a better living by selling sarees in areas like Rahmathnagar, Yousufguda, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, etc.

However, greed got the better of her and she began stealing from the homes of her clients. Bhawani who had been in the business of selling sarees for the last few months would visit homes of people under the pretext of business.

“She took care to go about her job when only the women were present at home. She would lure them by quoting low prices for expensive sarees. When the woman would go inside to bring the money, Bhawani would quickly pocket gold and other valuables and flee,” said Nageshwar Rao.

Bhawani managed to rob nearly half-a-dozen such homes in the last five months. She made money by selling the stolen jewellery. She reportedly used this money to pay off a loan. When her clients realised what she had done, they lodged a complaint.

Upon investigating they found clues that led to her. Bhawani confessed and the police recovered 170 grams of gold ornaments. She was produced in court and is in prison. The police is also inquiring if she has any other criminal record.

Bhawani is a native of Visakhapatnam and was living in the City with her husband and son. After her husband’s death, the responsibility of looking after unemployed 25-year-old son , fell on her. Concerned about her son’s vagabond ways, Bhawani took to thievery to support themselves.
