NEW YORK: US Fed Cup captain Mary Joe Fernandez and US Tennis Association Men’s Player Development chief Jay Berger were named Tuesday as coaches for the US women’s and men’s tennis teams for the London Olympics.

Fernandez won Olympic gold in women’s doubles with Gigi Fernandez at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics and she guided the Americans to the Fed Cup final in two of her first three years as captain.

“I’m honored and thrilled to be selected as the Olympic coach,” Fernandez said. “Some of my fondest tennis memories are from the Olympics and the incomparable thrill of winning a gold medal. I would like nothing more than to share in that Olympic experience with our team this summer.”

All US team nominations will be based upon next Monday’s ATP and WTA rankings. The US team will include up to six men and six women, with up to four of each in singles and up to two in doubles and mixed doubles.
