Who’ll bomb whom is the big question
This summer, the faction- ridden Kurnool district is gearing itself up to witness another scorching battle. The war will be between political opponents at the famous Bambula Gadda (Place of Bombs) — Allagadda Assembly constituency, which are going for by-election on June 12.
The constituency fell vacant following the resignation of sitting MLA Shoba Nagireddy who joined YSRC. The constituency acquired the name of Bombula Gadda as political rivalry among political parties led to throwing bombs at each other for political one-upmanship between 1975 and 1995. These fights also led to loss of lifes on several occasions.
Being a close relative of former chief minister YSR, it was expected of Shoba to quit her position and join the YSRC. During the 2009 general election, Shoba Nagireddy won the Allagadda seat with Chiranjeevi’s PRP ticket. She defeated her rival from Congress G Pratap Reddy with a comfortable majority. This time too, it is the battle between old rivals as the ruling Congress fielded Pratap Reddy again to wrest the seat from the same woman who beat him.
Shobha’s husband Bhuma Nagireddy is a former TDP MP and her father SV Subba Reddy is a former minister and a political veteran of Kurnool district. While she is fighting this election with the sole aim of proving that the legacy left behind by YSR still enjoys mass support, the Congress is trying to woo the voters by portraying Jagan’s darker side, which led to his arrest.
“Our aim is clear. It is to expose the ruling Congress party which launched the vendetta politics against YSR’s family, who is instrumental in bringing back the Congress into power for a second consecutive term. The people of the State are indebted to YSR for his welfare programmes and will vote for my party,” Shoba told Postnoon. She has already toured the constituency and is now meeting voters once again.
On the other hand, the ruling Congress candidate Pratap Reddy says that the constituency did not get any benefit during YSR’s rule. “What has she done for the constituency’s development? She won the election riding on PRP’s tide,” he said.TDP has fielded E Rama Pulla Reddy for the seat. But according to analysts the main contest will be between YSRC and Congress.
