Spanish mosque, Begumpet
Hyderabad, being a Nawabi city, has no dearth of beautiful mosques but the one mosque that truly stands out is the Spanish mosque that is located opposite to the old Airport at Begumpet.
Also known as Masjid Iqbal Ud Daula, it was built by a Paigah Nawab, Nawab Sir Iqbal Ud Daula in the year 1906.At a first glance one can see that this mosque isdifferent from any mosque seen anywhere else in the country.
The reason is that the architecture of the mosque has a very heavy Spanish influence. It is believed that the nawab, on his trip to Spain was very impressed by the Cathedral–Mosque of Córdoba and when he returned to Hyderabad he got a replica made.
One can observe that instead of the usual minarets and domes that adorn the mosques, this mosque has spires.Another feature about this place is that the walls have inscriptions from the Quran engraved on the walls inside the mosque. This is truly an uniquely iconic place.
