The general body meeting of GHMC was yesterday adjourned sine die by Mayor Majid Hussain without completing its remaining agenda. The Mayor, who initially convened the meeting on May 19 this month, had adjourned for want of quorum to May 24 as the listed agenda of the meeting could not be completed. Out of a total 17 topics listed for discussion, only six could be taken up during the six hour meeting. The resolutions taken included dismantling illegal hoarding, streamlining street-lighting system, and setting up women community centres.
At the beginning the Opposition TDP members stalled the proceedings demanding the mayor for a resolution on petrol price hike. Holding placards and denouncing the State government for high sales tax on petrol. The TDP members made a ruckus that forced the mayor to adjourn the meeting for five minutes.
Not content with slogans, the Telugu Desam Party members rushed to mayor’s podium demanding the mayor to pass the resolution to reduce sales tax imposed by State government on petrol. TDP floor leader S Srinivas Reddy said that the State imposed `27.50 sales tax on petrol.
He asked the mayor to pass a resolution demanding the government to reduce sales tax. He wanted it reduced by half to give relief to the people The Mayor declined the request saying that the petrol price did not come under the corporation.
Mayor, commissioner fume
The attitude of corporators on various issues also angered the mayor and commissioner MT Krishna Babu during the meeting. Reacting on the raising of petrol price issue by TDP corporators, the mayor had repeatedly told them not to raise the hike issue as it is not the responsibility of the corporation. Expressing his anger, the mayor smilingly asked the TDP members to ride bicycles as it is their party’s symbol. The discussion on street lighting issue also angered the mayor. This time around, the commissioner also joined him as there was lot of din in the hall.
