Everyone dreams of the perfect wedding. But what do you do when you don’t have the means to realise you dream? This is where mass marriages come in as a boon. In fact, several communities in the City are now organising mass marriages to help those who cannot afford to plan their own wedding.
“In my opinion, this is the best way to help the poor and bridge the gap between the rich and the poor. There are many families who can’t afford lavish ceremonies and several parents still find it difficult to find their daughters a groom thanks to the demand for a hefty dowry. Mass marriages are the perfect option for them. For me it’s more like a blessing,” said Narender Thakur, member of Maharana Pratap Sabha.
The Sikh community recently organised a mass marriage where 22 Sikh couples got married in the presence of over 25,000 Sikhs who came from across the country to bless the newly weds. “This is the seventh consecutive year that the Prabhandak Committee of Gurudwara Saheb Barambala has conducted mass marriages. The couples and their parents were extremely happy that the marriages took place in such a grand manner,” said Bachanjeet Singh, a member.
Interestingly, the work doesn’t end here. The community keeps in touch with the couple for at least one year. Time to time counselling and financial help is also provided to them if required. The couple is also required to submit health certificates before the wedding. In addition to the help from the community the State government too promotes the noble cause. Many a times financial help is provided by the government to the couples and organisers.
