Sutton takes 1,500m crown

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina: America’s Chloe Sutton won the women’s 1,500m freestyle event on Thursday ahead of training partner Ashley Twichell as the Charlotte Ultra Swim kicked off with two distance events.

Sutton won in 16 minutes 23.96seconds, the seventh-fastest time in the world this year in the event, which isn’t contested by women at the Olympics.Twichell was second in 16:25.25, with Venezuela’s Adreina Pinto third clocking 16:38.64.

America’s Chad La Tourette won the men’s 800m freestyle in 7:59.31. Connor Jaeger was second in 8:00.81 and Sean Ryan third in 8:07.43.The meeting is part of United States of America’s Swimming’s Grand Prix series and features several US Olympians tuning up for their London Games bids, including Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte and Natalie Coughlin.
