Marriage fraud lands family in jail
In a weird case of avarice, a married man who happens to be the son of a retired cop, and his parents are charged with duping an unwary family of Rs.13 lakh and a car with a promise of marriage. The man has since been absconding after the prospective in-laws alerted the police.
A Hyderabadi, Umeshwar Rao, 32, was working in Ireland doing odd jobs, and during his stay, he got acquainted with another Hyderabad family there. Later, he married the daughter of that family, by name, Dhanalaxmi. That was in 2008. Recently, the two came home and his parents and he plotted to get a fat dowry by holding back the first marriage.
Sub-inspector of Madannapet, Krishna, said the vile bid had a chilling twist. In this instance, the plot to get Umeshwar married again on the sly involved his own niece (uncle’s daughter)!
The marriage was fixed on March 2012 and it seems that Dhanalaxmi was in the dark about the plot for some time. It was allegedly agreed between the parents of the two families that the boy being ‘well placed’ in a foreign country, he would be given a dowry of `13 lakh and a car. But Umeshwar’s parents insisted on payment of the dowry before the marriage ceremony which the girl’s parents did.
SI Krishna said, after the payment, the man disappeared. By now Dhanalaxmi came to know of the plot and she disclosed to all that she and Umeshwar are married and produced the marriage certificate. The police have since dashed off a ‘look out’ circular to all stations and alerted airports against his departure. Umeshwar’s would-be father-in-law Shankar, a businessman, has lodged a criminal complaint.
It now appears that he has not left India but is hiding somewhere. The police have arrested the parents and other members of the family on charge of conspiracy and cheating and sent them to jail.
