Simple questions —and simple answers — are what we need in life. Alexander McCall Smith gives us that and much more in this book

As a first time reader of McCall’s books, this book certainly presented a challenge which I willingly took on. Initially what seemed to me like mixed-up associations and threads running through, slowly became clear as I wound my way through the novel. This is McCall’s twelfth book in his The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series.

For first time readers, here’s a recap, The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency chronicles and follows the life of Precious Ramotswe, proprietor of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, and her adventures as she solves the cases of her clients and the complexities of her personal life with wisdom and a dose of humour.

In The Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party we find that a wedding is in the offing, other old friends appear including the tiny white van which Ramostwe loved and had solved a lot of mysteries. Grace Makutsi and Phuti Radiphuti’s long-pending nuptials finally take place after some roadblocks. Meanwhile, Ramostwe has to travel to an unfamiliar world, rather a frightening one to Gabarone to solve the mystery of the cows whose tendons were sliced. In the midst of all this she has also taken up the task of finding Charlie, her husband JLB Matekoni’s apprentice at their mechanic shop.

Botswana is what you see through the book, McCall makes no attempt to hide his fascination forthe place. Also by adding incidents from previous books, McCall attempts to keep readers in the loop.

McCall’s stories are slow and relaxing, they allow you to take in the story and its surroundings bit by bit, hence the feeling of being on a vacation. Satisfaction and a smile is guranteed by the end.
