The Child sexual abuse has been linked to homosexuality for many years now and there is an ongoing debate of the influence of abuse on a person’s sexuality. There are many people worldwide who believe that most homosexual youth were sexually abused as kids and those that claim to have not faced abuse, were abused at such a young age that their conscious memory cannot recollect it.
There are many studies that show that a large percentage of gay men faced sexual abuse of some sort when they were young. Most of them faced abuse at the hands of someone from their own family and for many of them it was women who abused them. Many psychologists claim that everyone is born heterosexual and influences in their life that caused some trauma to their minds, changed them into homosexuals. They go so far as to say that certain ‘clinics’ can offer them therapy and turn them back to heterosexuals, the way they were meant to be.
A majority of psychological organisations across the world claim no hand in supporting this theory but such theories are rampant and many people find it easier to believe that once they have the root cause of why their child turned gay, they can eliminate the root cause and turn the child straight again.
Joseph Nicolosi, a psychologist in California, goes so far as to claim that he has found the perfect ‘psychodynamic’ reparative therapy for people that will turn them straight.
Strangely, to contradict the point of all people being born ‘straight’, there aren’t many studies showing the correlation of homosexuality in bisexuals, lesbians or even the transgender folks. There are horror stories of what parents force their children to do, to force homosexuality from their minds.
According to a study by a group of doctors in the US, one in five men is abused as a child. There is no study to check how many of them turn homosexual, nor is there a study to show why many turn gay and many go on living traumatic lives burdened with memories of their troubled past.
There also are many myths that indicate that homosexual men and women have more tendencies to abuse children and turn them gay when compared to straight folk. This, despite the staggering number of heterosexual people found to be paedophiles.
Many research papers claim they have evidence to prove that homosexuality is definitely influenced by child abuse, while there are many who claim that this is completely untrue.
I recently read a blog about a person who was abused as a child by a male adult but what is interesting about the article was that this person already knew he was gay before he was abused. I’m not sure if psychologists would argue that the person turned gay after getting a hint of the impending abuse.
What struck me as unique about the blog post was that this person went on great lengths to erase the memory of the sexual abuse and even tried treatments that would turn him straight. But, at the end of it what helped him the most was coming out and talking about his abuse and embracing his sexuality.
The studies that show a correlation of sexual abuse and homosexuality give parents the false hope that they can turn their children straight. Instead of fighting the root cause of abuse, irrespective of whether the child turns homosexual, parents see a new ray of hope that this change is reversible.
Many parents also fear that homosexual adults are very open about their sexuality and this in turn could affect minds of younger kids and turn them gay. To fight this notion and set things right, LGBT organisations throughout the world are building homosexual and heterosexual alliances to encourage people to have a healthy dialogue and get myths out of the way.
