‘Seeti bajao, chor bhagao,’ say City cops
In a bid to curb the growing crime rate in the city, the Cyberabad police force has come up with an innovative community policing formula aptly titled, “Seeti bajao, Chor bhagao.” As a part of the awareness campaign due to be taken up by May, the police department has shouldered the responsibility of spreading awareness about crime in the City as well as suitable measures to avoid it.
D Tirumala Rao, commissioner of cyberabad division said, “ Most of the cases that we have dealt with point towards a lack of prompt action. For instance, a recent robbery case where a woman’s pleas for help fell on deaf ears paved an easy exit for the robbers. Incidents like these show that the public in general is slow in its reaction time. We are asking the people to be alert and responsibly help one another in such situations. This will also aid and ease the police investigation.”
“We believe that the crime rate in the City will be drastically reduced if the public were to be alert and spontaneous when dealing with situations involving any crime, robbery, assault, fraudulent activities etc. So we have decided to rake up an awareness among the citizens through suggestions and remedies, to be alert at all times and be proactive in their role towards eliminating crime in the City, ” he said.
Last year’s crime statistics showed a considerable decline in crime rate in the City but officials at the Cyberabad police division are on their toes. Owing to the rapid mushrooming of housing colonies in and around Cyberabad, a steep growth and influx in the city population, policing has become a difficult job.
A close co-ordination between the cops and the citizens is the motto of the campaign, to collectively reduce the crime rate in the City.
While the civil society may welcome this move, what remains to be seen if these initiatives are as effective as promised.
