Even as the Congress party announced its candidates for the seven Assembly constituencies which are going to polls on March 18, Vijayalakshmi, the wife of the late legislator Rajeswar Reddy from Mahbubnagar Assembly seat, announced that she would contest as an independent. She was actually taken by Minister D K Aruna to the Chief Minister last month and convinced that she contest the byelection.

They are: R Pratap (Station Ghanpur); Ramachandra Reddy (Adilabad); Damodar Reddy (Nagarkurnool); Raja Reddy (Kamareddy); Mutyala Prakash (Mahbubnagar); and Vishnuvardhan Reddy (Kollapur).

Even before the APCC president Botsa Satyanarayana, who boarded a flight for Delhi, arrived, the Congress announced the candidates. Further details are awaited.

With the party making a volte-face on nominating her, Vijayalakshmi, announced that she would contest as an independent. In fact, Y S Jaganmohan Reddy urged her to contest on behalf o the YSR Congress. He also went on to say that his party would not field a candidate, if she contested on behalf of any party.

The Congress, on the face of it, appears to have been mired in numerous pulls and pressures and finally chose candidates who either lost their ground or yet to gain ground in the respective constituencies. The six Assembly constituencies going to polls in the Telangana region are likely to administer a bitter pill to the party.
