“You have to come because we have something for everyone! Whether you’re a techie, an aspiring dancer, an amateur filmmaker, or are just looking for fun. This is a technical-cum-cultural festival with some amazing pro-shows lined up!

If not elsewhere, I think BITS Pilani Hyderabad is the place to be this weekend.” Says Raghuram Reddy Salguti, the president of the Students’ Union, BITS Pilani, Hyderabad campus, when asked about why students should head to Pearl World 1-2.

Pearl World 1-2 is BITS Pilani Hyderabad’s annual festival, which is going to take place from the 16th to 19th of this month at the college campus. This festival began as a city-wide fest in 2010, and went national in 2011, and this is the third edition of the fest.

Armed with a mind boggling set of competitions like ‘Till deaf do us apart’, a nationwide search for India’s best rock band, or ‘Glitterati’, a fashion parade at Pearl, or even ‘FragLore’, a LAN gaming tournament, and performances by Benny Dayal for the Bollywood act, Thurisaz for the International Rock act, and David and Ela Rose for the International DJ act, Pearl ‘12 world 1-2 is set to impress.

With an expected turn out of over 8,000 students from all across the country, the organising committee is gathering forces to make sure the event goes off without a glitch. “Preparation for this fest began last semester itself and almost every student has been involved in one department or the other. The Students’ Union and the Student Co-ordinators for various departments of course have had a major role, but almost every student has contributed to the organising of the fest. Also, our professors have been very co-operative and extended a helping hand whenever needed. Now comes the executing part of it, for which we expect about 300 volunteers to help us out!” says the team.

For ANY details about this festival, events and registrations, check out their official website and their Facebook page. Concludes Raghuram, “Everyone’s excited about the fest! We just can’t wait for our exams to get over.” So if the town looks deserted this weekend, you know where all the action is happening!

Lecturer Speaks

Kannan Ramaswamy

Asst Professor, Physics Group

BITS-Pilani Hyderabad Campus

How long has it been since you began teaching? Have you always wanted to teach?

I have been teaching for the last three years. I always wanted to be a teacher. In fact, my passion towards teaching intensified after seeing great teachers during my masters, doctoral and post-doctoral research period.

Physics is a kind of a subject that needs to be understood. What kind of an approach do you take towards teaching this subject?

My approach of teaching physics starts with giving the students a rough physical picture of the problem followed by a thorough mathematical analysis. Whenever possible, I try to experimentally demonstrate the concepts in the classroom.

You must be aware of the new coaching institutions that have come up. Do you think they help in the long run?

I believe that most of the coaching institutions impart good training in basic science subjects. However, the students MUST make sure that they get a thorough understanding of the basic concepts along with getting trained to answer questions swiftly. A good grasp of fundamentals will help the students to do well in the future.

What kind of a rapport do you share with your students?

I try to create an atmosphere such that the students do not feel any sort of inhibitions in approaching me to clarify or share their difficulties. I do not find a need to support them emotionally as our campus is very vibrant and positive.

What according to you is your biggest challenge as a professor?

The biggest challenge as a professor is to keep up the enthusiasm on a day-to-day basis and therefore creating an

interest among students in the subject being taught.

Any message for aspiring engineering students?

We live in a knowledge-based world. Therefore, my message to aspiring engineers is to gather knowledge and create new technical knowledge that will transform our country into a developed nation in the near future.
