This young woman has 150 crimes against her name, is known for her wily ways and has been elusive for quite some time. The police hunt is on but who knows…
Next time you see a swarthy, smart, jeans-clad woman lurking in your surroundings, posing as a busy executive trying to locate an office or home, be alert. She could be Hyderabad’s own Lady Thief minus a gun.
Chenchu Lakshmi is around 28-years-old and has to her (dis)credit 150 cases of thefts and burglaries that took place mostly in varied parts of the City. But don’t be fooled by Chenchu. She goes with many other names such as Guddlapoochi, Bharati, Savetri, Surekha, Radha, Maneyamma, Kamala, Rani…
The police who are in awe of her daredevilry say she goes in and out of mansions and bungalows with the ease of an eel, and she doesn’t go for crap, mind you, she only steals gold and diamonds and cash if available. Nothing else attracts her. Inspector Mohd Riyazuddin says she has a ‘star place’ among criminals in the City crime records. And, she has a lavish lifestyle to match her ‘skills.’
Postnoon tracked the Queen Burglar’s deeds, and gathered that she is declared a fugitive by the City police.
She hails from Guntur and lost her parents at an early age. She turned to crime in her early teens. Chenchu is said to have committed her first theft at the age of 14 in a house under the Panjagutta police limits. Her first ‘trophy,’ a tola of gold was good enough for her; but she was traced and sent to juvenile home. But it did not reform her. “When she came out she seemed to have taken a master’s degree in thievery,” observed a retired police officer. She went in for a spate of thefts and was caught many times. She was convicted and spent three years in jail.
Soon after getting out of jail, she came in contact with her equal, Kiran Kumar, who too was a ‘skilled thief’. The duo thought they were made for each other and got married. But they developed differences within a few years and separated.
She now takes the help of a cousin’s son who keeps a watch while she ‘works’ inside a home, police say. She was arrested a few times and convicted but managed to get away with light punishment or jumped bail.
SR Nagar, Panjagutta, Begumpet, Bowenpally, Kulsumpura, Habeeb Nagar, Mangalhad, Shah Iniyat Gunj, Afzalgunj etc, but also in Cyberabad commissionarate limits such as Ragender Nagar, Chanda Nagar, Kukatpally, Rayadurgam have cases registered against her.
And she has no remorse whatsoever. Once when she was arrested and produced before the court she told the magistrate point blank: “I will go stealing once I am out.”
